Brake discs and pads are an integral part of the braking system of your car. The discs, together with other parts in the braking system, are responsible for causing the car to slow down as soon as you hit the brake pedal. The braking system is a very important part and requires good maintenance.
Functioning of brake discs in your car
The moment you hit the brake pedal of your car, brake fluid is pushed to the wheel brake cylinder. The brake pads are then pushed against the brake discs. This reduces the speed of the disc. The brake disc is connected to the wheel. The moment the disc decreases in speed, the wheel will automatically do the same. Due to this constant friction, both the brake discs as and pads are subject to wear. Moreover, lots of heat is generated during this process. To prevent malfunction more heavy cars are often equipped with ventilated discs. As opposed to solid brakes, ventilated ones are hollowed out with fins or vanes joining together the disc's two contact surfaces. These fins ensure that the heat can easily dissipate. Ventilated brake discs, also called two-piece discs, are often thicker than non-ventilated solid ones.
Worn brake discs
Broken or worn brake discs can be recognized by a number of points. If they make a peeping, scratching, vibrating or knocking sound while braking, this is often an indication of malfunction. A loosening brake pedal or a clamping brake mechanism can also indicate a defect. The braking distance is often also increased if something isn?t completely right. Do you recognize one of these points? Then quickly check whether your discs need to be replaced.
Replacement brake discs
After a while, brake discs need to be replaced. They can become too thin or get distorted. The manufacturer often specifies the minimum thickness of the disc. It is important that you follow these regulations. It is also possible that the brakes wear unevenly, tear or crack. Also, then the discs need to be replaced. We do not recommend cutting back on these important parts of the car. Are you planning on replacing the brake discs yourself? Then you need to replace the discs on both sides of the same axle (front or rear). In addition, it is recommended to install new brake pads. Only this way can quality be guaranteed during braking.
