Air suspension has the function to increase the driving comfort of the car. Air suspension is typically used on more luxurious cars and SUV models and ensures that the shocks caused by unevenness in the road surface are absorbed. This way you will suffer as little as possible from this while driving. The air suspension also ensures optimal road holding and less wear on the car tyres and brakes. Opposite the standard shock absorbers the air suspension is a pneumatic system. This means that the system is driven by air pressure.
Air suspension broken
Over time, the car's air suspension will need to be replaced. How long this takes depends on the driving style. If you often drive on unpaved roads, this car part will wear out faster and therefore need to be replaced sooner. A defect in the air suspension of the car can be recognized by the car hanging lop-sided. Another symptom of a faulty air suspension is the car hanging low. For example, if the car is suspended about 3 centimetres lower than the day before after standing still for a night, this is a signal to check the air suspension. Furthermore, a light may illuminate in the dashboard to indicate that there is something wrong with the suspension. When the air suspension of the car no longer functions properly, you will notice this from the poor damping and the reduced driving comfort. In all cases it is important to replace the air suspension. If you drive for too long with a broken air suspension, you run the risk of additional damage to the car.
Replace air suspension
You can do the replacement of the air suspension yourself. It is mostly the same as replacing the shock absorbers. No special tools are required for this. The air suspension looks the same for most cars: two struts, two bellows and a compressor. On average, these car parts last 6 to 10 years. The bellows (rubber parts) are the most susceptible to damage. These dry out over time, causing cracks. After replacing the air suspension, it is important to calibrate the suspension. In this way, the computer of the car knows what the height of the wheels is and how the compressor can be controlled correctly.
