When you get in or out of the car, the courtesy lights come on. This is of course very useful, especially if you often drive in the dark. The courtesy lighting comes on using a switch. This is called the door contact switch. This door contact switch is activated when the car door is opened. So you are always provided with light in the car when getting in and out. Each door of the car is equipped with a door contact switch. This ensures that the light also comes on when the occupants get in or out or when the tailgate is opened.
Door contact switch broken
The door contact switch is widely used and will therefore wear out over time. A worn switch will prevent the light from coming on when a door is opened. In this case, it is important to first check whether the bulbs need to be replaced, or whether the switch is broken. Common problems with a defective switch are, for example, moisture and dirt in the contacts or damage that occurs accidentally when you work on the interior.
Connect door contact switch
When connecting a new door contact switch, it is important to remove the negative battery cable from the battery before starting the job. You can now proceed safely. Replacing the door contact switch is not a difficult job. The switch is mounted in the door with a torx screw. When you have removed this, the switch can be jacked off together with the wiring. Be careful not to disconnect the wiring until it extends well beyond the door. Otherwise, the wires could get lost on the inside of the door. If this is successful, you can connect the wiring to the new door contact switch and the whole can be neatly processed in the door again.
