Engine stand

The engine stands are the support that secures the engine block to the chassis. These are often made of metal supports with a strong rubber. An engine stand has the task of absorbing the vibrations and shock movements. These vibrations and shocks can come from the engine as well as from the outside. Every time you start the car or when you accelerate or brake, you will not notice the movements of the engine block. Due to the frequent use, the engine stands will wear and need to be replaced. At Winparts you can quickly order new supports with your car model.

The engine block of the car is attached to the chassis with engine stands. Most cars have 3 engine stands, two on the side and one on the back. However, the position of the supports and the  engine in the car depends on how the engine is positioned. There is also a difference between front- and rear-wheel drive cars.

The job of the engine stands is to absorb shock movements and vibrations from the engine block or outside. For example, when you start, accelerate or brake the car, the engine will start to move. The engine stands ensure that you hardly notice this. In order to be able to absorb these vibrations well, the supports will therefore be somewhat flexible. That is why most supports are made of metal with strong rubbers in it. The rubber part ensures that vibrations and shocks are well absorbed. If an engine stand only consisted of metal, this would be a lot less comfortable. In addition, the metal would be loaded too much, which could cause them to crack.

Engine stand broken symptoms

As just described, the engine stands absorb vibrations and jolts during starting and driving. The supports are therefore heavily loaded every ride, which can cause them to malfunction. Usually, faulty engine stands cause a number of symptoms. One of the most common symptoms is impact noises coming from the engine compartment. These noises are caused by the engine not being properly seated in the engine stands. Another symptom is that vibrations arise, because the engine stands will absorb the shock movements of the engine less well. Also, a moving engine in the engine compartment can indicate broken or failing engine stands. You will especially feel this motor movement when accelerating or braking. The motor will then jerk forwards, backwards, left or right. Properly working engine stands will normally stop this. If you recognize any of these symptoms or suspect that engine suspension problems have arisen, check your vehicle.

Replace engine stand

To be able to check whether the engine stands need to be replaced, you will have to put your car on a service pit or jack it up with a  car jack. It is not possible to reach all engine stands from the hood. Of course you can also have the inspection carried out by a garage, but there is a good chance that the costs will quickly become high. Do the engine stands show serious mechanical damage or cracks in the rubber? Then it is important that you replace them as soon as possible.
