The fuel pump of your car ensures that the fuel from the fuel tank passes through the fuel hoses in the engine. Of course, it depends on the type of fuel, whether your car needs a diesel pump or petrol pump. A fuel pump can either be a low-pressure pump, often a mechanical fuel pump, or a high-pressure pump, often an electric fuel pump. Some fuel injected engines have two pumps: one low-pressure/high volume supply pump in the tank and one high-pressure/low volume pump on or near the engine. Often, carbureted engines use a low-pressure pump which ensures that the fuel is transported from the tank. The high-pressure pump supplies the fuel injectors at the desired pressure the right amount of fuel. Modern cars are often equipped with an electric pump, while older cars are often equipped with a mechanical pump.

Symptoms of a failing fuel pump

Like most car parts, a fuel pump is subject to wear. This may cause various defects. These defects can be caused by, for example, corrosion on the fuel tank. A contaminated fuel filter can also cause damage to the pump. Furthermore, contaminated or low-quality fuel can also cause damage. The pump can also overheat and break. If you often drive with a minimum amount of fuel in your tank, this can also cause damage to the pump. But how do you recognize a failing fuel pump? Damage can be recognized by the following symptoms:

  • Engine decreases in power;
  • Low pressure in the fuel system;
  • The engine has difficulty starting;
  • Slow acceleration.

A fuel pump needs to be replaced if it supplies insufficient pressure or does not supply pressure at all. If there is not enough pressure, your car has trouble starting or cannot start altogether. In modern cars, the warning light on your dashboard will light up if there is something wrong with the fuel pump. This is the warning light that resembles an engine. Is your fuel pump broken? Then it's time to replace it.

Replace the fuel pump

Does it appear that the fuel pump of your car is broken and needs to be replaced? Then you can easily and inexpensively buy a new pump at Winparts using your number plate. How easy it is to replace the fuel pump differs by car type and make. A mechanical fuel pump can be easily replaced by just loosening a few bolts.

An electric fuel pump is slightly more difficult to replace. Sometimes you even have to dismantle the entire fuel tank. On other occasions, the fuel pump is only accessible through the boot of your car. In this case, you need to remove the cover plate, plugs and fuel hoses. Normally an electric pump can be found under the car or under the bonnet and is also easy to disconnect and replace. While replacing, make sure that the fuel does not spill.
