Does your car not start? Starting problems with your car can be caused by the spark plugs. The spark plug can be found under the bonnet of your car. These are, as it were, screwed onto the engine. They have the task of giving off a spark. The spark will ignite the engine. Are the spark plugs worn-out? Then the engine will start difficulty or not at all. Then it is also time to replace them. But, in addition to bad spark plugs, your car may also have other problems that prevent the engine from starting.
How to check spark plugs
When your car doesn't start, you should check the spark plugs. Make sure to wait until the engine has cooled down! The engine of your car can get very hot. The spark plugs can be found under the bonnet. You will see a bundle of spark plug cables on the engine. There are often four to eight of them. This differs per brand and type of car. The plugs are under the covers at the ends of these spark plug cables (side of the engine). You can also consult the car?s manual to find the exact location.
Symptoms of bad spark plugs
Next, you can check them for wear. A worn spark plug can be recognized by a number of points, namely; carbon deposits, fusing, deposits and insulator breakage. You can also recognize wear on the colour of the spark plugs. Is the colour of the spark plug black or grey? Then it indicates carbon deposit or deposition. However, a light brown colour does not indicate a defect, this is a normal colour.
How often change spark plugs
It is difficult to determine when you need to change spark plugs. They do not really have a fixed lifespan. However, we would recommend replacing the spark plugs around the 30,000 miles. It is better to replace them a little too early than late. Driving with bad spark plugs can cause damage to your car?s engine. And again, damage to the engine can lead to high costs. However, spark plugs are relatively cheap in purchase and replacement, so doing this in time is wise. The spark plugs also need to be replaced if they have one or more of the symptoms mentioned above.
Spark plug replacement
Do you recognize one of the symptoms mentioned earlier? Then it is time to replace the spark plugs. But, before you start replacing the spark plugs, you must first let the engine cool down. The spark plugs, engine block and the exhaust system are extremely hot when the engine has just run.
Now you can start with replacing the spark plugs. Work the plug carefully upwards and grab it at the bottom. Although, be careful, never pull on the spark plug cable. If the cable is damaged, you have a lot more work to do. Then put the spark plug wrench over the spark plug and take it out of the housing. We advise you to immediately check whether the spark plug cables are subject to wear. Then place the new spark plug and tighten it with the spark plug wrench, but do not over tighten it.
