Each wheel of the car has a strut. Each strut generally has two spring caps that support the vehicle's suspension. At the struts of the front axle, the lower cap is often welded to the shock absorber or track control arm. On the front axle, only the top cap can be disassembled. In the case of the struts of the rear axle, it generally applies that the spring caps can both be separated and disassembled. These separate caps are mounted between the coil spring and the strut bearing and thus keep the coil springs in place.
When a spring cap no longer functions (properly) this can be very dangerous. The cap is in direct contact with the suspension and the strut bearing. In the event of a defect in the cap, you are also soon assured of defects in the suspension or strut bearing. Defects in these parts can subsequently lead to unsafe situations. Therefore, make sure that you recognize and solve a defect in the cap as soon as possible.
Spring cap broken
The spring cap is generally a durable part and does not break easily. Nevertheless, due to the load-bearing and taxing function, rust can occur or the springs cap can crack or sag. When the spring cap is nearing its end, this will be noticeable by clicking or chattering noises at the spring strut. Furthermore, the car may show uneven tracking. Uneven tracking means that the wheels of the car are not evenly aligned. This can be noticed, for example, by the car that tends to steer in one direction or that the wheels on one side show more wear. You may also notice that the car bounces less comfortably with the road surface. It is also possible that the suspension will make a strong creaking sound when you drive over a hill, for example.
Replace spring cap
You can replace a spring cap yourself with some technical insight and the right materials. When replacing the spring cap, for example, you need a good car jack. A spring tensioner is also a very important tool when replacing the spring cap. The suspension will have to be tensioned again after mounting the cap. If you do not have the right material at home, the suspension cannot be correctly tensioned. Using materials other than a spring tensioner may cause the suspension to come loose and cause serious injury. Would you rather leave the job to a garage owner? Then make sure that you order the parts from Winparts and deliver them yourself. This is often a lot cheaper.
