Engine coolant ensures that the engine of your car stays at the right temperature. This prevents the engine of the car from overheating during a long traffic jam or tropical temperatures. Therefore, regularly checking the coolant level in your car is very important.

Check coolant

It is important that you regularly check the coolant level. You should only check the engine coolant when the engine has cooled down. You can easily read the level on the transparent  tank. You will find two indication lines on the reservoir; minimum and maximum level. If the liquid is still below the minimum level, it is important that you top up immediately. Does it appear that there is too little engine coolant in the car? Then it is also important that you have your car examined. Most variants such as G12 or G12+ are supposed to last as long as your car. A drop in level may indicate a leak. We recommend starting an examination yourself or having it done by a garage. Driving on can cause major damage. Tip: make sure you always have a bottle of engine coolant in the car.

What engine coolant

It is difficult to indicate what coolant is suitable for your car. However, it is important that you buy the right one. You cannot mix engine coolant with another type of coolant. The chemical composition of, for example, a green and red coolant differs. If these two are mixed, a chemical reaction can occur. A gel-like substance will form that can cause the cooling water channels to be clogged. This can lead to a broken thermostat and an overheated water pump. Please note: mixable coolant is an exception to this.

There are a few ways you can check what coolant is suitable for your car. First of all, you can look at the colour of the liquid. There are different colours, this way you can recognize the coolant. You can also check your car?s manual.

Top up coolant

Are you going to top up coolant? Always make sure that the engine has cooled down. If the engine is still warm, the cooling system is under pressure. If you remove the cap from the reservoir while the engine is hot, the (hot) liquid can spray up. Therefore, always wait until the engine has cooled down. Before refilling the coolant, we recommend that you first look at the current state of the fluid. Good engine coolant must be clear and feel oily. In addition, it should not smell too strong. Does the liquid look milky? Then this may indicate a head gasket leak. In this case, go to a garage as quickly as possible.

Topping up coolant is very easy. First, wait until the engine has cooled down. Then open the cap a little and release the pressure. When the pressure is gone, completely unscrew the cap. Then pour the correct engine coolant up to the maximum mark which is indicated on the reservoir. If you have trouble pouring, you can always use a funnel.
